StreetCode has existed as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit since 2016. Its mission is to bridge the digital divide by sharing the mindset, skills, and access people need to embrace tech and innovation. The curriculum prioritizes AI education and focuses on moving students from tech consumers to tech creators, while teaching marketable skills in design, coding, and entrepreneurship. StreetCode provides laptops and free courses for the community, and also offers classes that help adult learners build basic tech skills for better job opportunities. Classes are accessible to students across the country, and many students attend with friends or family or are referred by someone in the community.
StreetCode teachers and mentors come from the community and work with BIPOC students, and the organization connects the community with Silicon Valley and industry professionals. StreetCode has earned a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator and was named a 2021 California Nonprofit of the Year for California’s 13th Senate District.
One StreetCode student shared that the first class was confidence boosting and helped them find their passion. A parent described attending classes with their children instead of just dropping them off. Another student said they expected a regular class but found the positive energy and kept attending. A parent noted that their daughter used the 3D printer, made t-shirts, and enjoyed the arts and crafts, and that the class always offered something new.
